Bradford-Niedermann Broadside Series

Since 2019, the Bradford-Niedermann Broadside Series has presented fine-press broadsides of select poems first published in Ecotone, designed and printed by featured letterpress printers. The broadsides are shared with audiences at a reading by the poet(s), which also includes an artist’s talk by the year’s featured printer.

The inaugural launch was held during AWP 2019 at the Pacific Northwest College of Art Print Studio; since 2020, launches have been part of UNC Wilmington’s Writers’ Week. Audience members receive a broadside gratis, and each poet receives twenty-five copies of their own broadside; the remainder are sold at book fairs and offered as incentives during fundraising. To hear about opportunities to acquire copies of these limited-edition works of art, you can sign up for our newsletter.

This series is named for Jason Bradford, who completed his MFA at UNCW and served as Ecotone’s poetry editor during that time, and his mother, Shirley Niedermann. In 2022, in celebration of the posthumous publication of Jason’s debut poetry collection, Stellaphasia, the series featured one of his poems. You can find more about Jason’s work and about the series in this introduction. And you can order Stellaphasia from North American Review Press.

The series’s founder and director is Ecotone’s editor, Anna Lena Phillips Bell. Poems are selected by the Ecotone student and faculty editorial team from those published in recent issues of the magazine. In an interview for the North Carolina Writers’ Network with former Ecotone staffer Katherine O’Hara, Bell notes, “The series celebrates poetry of place and the slow craft of letterpress printing—which, given the extensive, heavy equipment required, is by necessity rooted in place.”

For vital support of this series, we are thankful to the UNCW Department of Creative Writing and to the National Endowment for the Arts.
