Jane Satterfield

Jane Satterfield’s five poetry books include The Badass Brontës, winner of the Diode Editions Poetry Prize, and Apocalypse Mix, winner of the Autumn House Poetry Prize. She’s received an NEA poetry fellowship, the Bellingham Review’s 49th Parallel Award, the Ledbury Poetry Festival Prize, and more. She is married to poet Ned Balbo and lives in Baltimore, where she is a professor of writing at Loyola University Maryland.

Deer in Winter

One way they enter is to pause,
hooved, indelicate among the trees
where elms and oaks rise in a remnant forest.
Ears cupped toward the slightest sound
