Mita Mahato

Mita Mahato is the artist and author of Arctic Play, forthcoming from The 3rd Thing. Her poetry comics appear in Iterant, Shenandoah, Coast/NoCoast, ANMLY, and Drunken Boat, as well as in the collection In Between published by Pleiades. She developed “Whale Fall: Sequences 1, 2, 3” in dialogue with Dr. Silke Laakmann while in residency with Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) and Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK).

The term whale fall describes the ecosystem that emerges when a whale carcass falls to the ocean floor. The decomposing body invites and is aided by a biodiverse community of hagfishes, octopuses, bone-eating worms, snails, and countless other species—some uniquely adapted to reside within this deep sea biome.
