Chandelier—Sea, Land, Sky

Cut Xuan paper on silk, 2017
34 x 26 inches

In Chandelier—Sea, Land, Sky, I imagined an opulent world in which humanity and nature coexist in beautiful synergy. Based on the form of a luxurious chandelier, I reconstructed the three-tiered fixture by replacing the crystals and bulbs with disparate natural motifs from the sea, land, and sky. While seashells and starfish populate the bottom, water lilies spring from the center. Above them are moving clouds, the sun, and birds in flight. Among these habitats are human-made constructs—fishing nets, boats, skyscrapers, a greenhouse, highways, cars, and an amusement park—that recognize the vital role of ecosystem services in nourishing and accommodating modern living.
