I dreamed I was such as are of a clean heart,
for they are not in trouble, as other men
are. They don’t get plagued. Whenever they sin
they feel alright about it. They do not start
everything over. They’re fine with where they’ve been
in dreams. Those who are of a clean heart
are not troubled, like all the other men
I’ve dreamed I was,
men and women, whose lives are like star charts
speckled with dark stars, or speckled like wrens’
wings tucked against the winter coming in.
I dreamed I was such as are of a clean heart,
and I was not as troubled as other men.
And then I was not plagued when I saw the sin
I dreamed I was.
